Jazz phenomenon Bennie Maupin has played with the giants of jazz, starting with Roy Haynes, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner and Marion Brown. A call from Miles Davis put Maupin in the line up that recorded his most earth shaking albums including Bitches Brew (Columbia/Legacy, 1969), Jack Johnson (Columbia/Legacy 1970), Big Fun (Columbia/Legacy, 1974) and On the Corner (Columbia/Legacy, 1972). Maupin's highly personal bass clarinet sound helped define these classic jazz albums as well as recordings by Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi Band, and the legendary Headhunters. He has also recorded with Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson and Woody Shaw, to name only a few. |
Maupin is equally noted as a composer and leading multi-woodwind soloist performing on tenor sax, soprano sax, alto sax, flute and alto flute and is a recent recipient of the prestigious Benny Golson Jazz Master Award. This award is bestowed upon prominent jazzmen that have made extraordinary contributions to jazz music. |
